Brandt-Templeton is from California but has represented New England for her first professional rugby season. She played for Central Washington University from 2020-2024 and then played in London while getting her master’s at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Rugby is not what brought her to the East Coast. In fact, her new position as the Research Assistant at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health introduced her to the Boston area, where she found the Banshees to continue her rugby career.

Though the WER season has come to a close, the rugby future of Kai Brandt-Templeton is looking bright!

Known as the “Queen of Baseball,” Mary Elizabeth “Lizzie” Murphy shattered barriers during the early 20th century, becoming one of the sport’s first true pioneers. At a time when women were often discouraged-or outright forbidden-from competing alongside men, Murphy built a reputation not as a novelty act, but as a legitimate baseball player whose talent demanded respect.

Born in Warren, Rhode Island in 1894, Murphy developed a love for baseball as a child. She left school at a young age to work in local textile mills, but whenever she had the opportunity, she was on the baseball field. Playing against boys and later men, she quickly established herself as an exceptional first baseman with reliable hands, strong instincts and a dependable bat. By the age of 17, she had signed with the Providence Independents, becoming one of the first women to earn a living playing professional baseball.

Throughout the 1910s and 1920s, she traveled across the United States and Canada with independent and all-star teams, often drawing thousands of spectators eager to see the woman who could compete with the game’s best male players. While promoters frequently advertised her gender to boost attendance, Murphy ensured fans remembered her for her ability.

That ability reached the national stage on Aug. 14, 1922.

In a charity exhibition at Boston’s Fenway Park, Murphy took the field with an American League All-Star team against the Boston Red Sox, becoming the first woman ever to play against a Major League Baseball team. Rather than simply making a ceremonial appearance, Murphy played two innings at first base, handling defensive chances cleanly as her team defeated the Red Sox 3-2. Nearly a century before conversations about women playing alongside men became common, Murphy had already shown it was possible.

Her list of accomplishments only continued to grow.

In 1928, Murphy appeared with a National League All-Star squad against the Boston Braves, making her the first player to suit up for both American League and National League all-star teams.

Murphy retired from baseball after a career spanning nearly two decades, returning to work in Rhode Island’s mills and oyster industry. Unlike many modern sports stars, she never became wealthy from her athletic achievements. Yet her influence extended far beyond her playing days.

Today, Murphy’s legacy continues to grow as historians and baseball fans recognize her contributions to the sport. Today’s generation is now introduced to her as she is the namesake for the WPBL team, the Los Angeles Queens.

The season series is tied 1-1 after the teams split their first two matchups. Chicago claimed the opener before Connecticut responded with a commanding victory in the rematch, setting the stage for another competitive contest.

The Sun enter Thursday looking to rebound after falling to the Washington Mystics in their most recent outing. Despite the loss, rookie forward Aneesah Morrow continued to impress, recording another strong offensive performance while providing her usual energy on the glass. Connecticut will once again rely on its young core to set the tone as it searches for its first win of the road trip.

Chicago will look to defend its home court behind standout center Kamilla Cardoso, whose size and rebounding continue to be a major factor for the Sky. Alongside Cardoso, the Sky’s young roster has shown flashes of promise throughout the season and will aim to use its physicality to slow Connecticut’s frontcourt.

Players to Watch

Aneesah Morrow, Connecticut Sun: Morrow has quickly become one of Connecticut’s most consistent contributors. Her ability to score in transition, attack the boards, and create second-chance opportunities makes her a player Chicago will need to contain.

Kamilla Cardoso, Chicago Sky: Cardoso anchors the Sky in the paint on both ends of the floor. If she controls the rebounding battle and protects the rim, Chicago will have a strong chance to come away with the win.

Team Names

The WPBL announced the names of the teams a few weeks prior to the start of the season.

Team Boston was named the Hunters. The team name was inspired by physician and women’s rights activist Harriot Hunt. Team Los Angeles was named the “Queens,” New York was named the “Heights” and San Francisco was the “Fireballs.”

Top Draft Picks

The Hunters’ first selection in the draft was Catcher Hyeonah Kim, who was selected fourth overall. Kim is from Seoul, South Korea. She had played for the Korean National Baseball Team, and she also competed in the Women’s Baseball Cup in 2025. The team’s second pick was Alli Schroder from British Columbia, Canada. Schroder is a right-handed pitcher and is a part of Canada’s National Women’s Baseball team.

Raine Padgham was the Hunter’s third pick. She is from Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada, and is a right-handed pitcher. Padgham plays for Canada’s National Women’s Baseball Team. Their last pick in the first round was Lexi Hastings. She is a left fielder from Holly Springs, North Carolina. Hastings previously played softball for the University of Connecticut.

New England Players

Keep an eye out for the native New England players. Beth Greenwood is a catcher from Amherst, New Hampshire. Greenwood made NCAA history in college when she became the first woman to play the catcher position on the men’s team. Originally from New York but now living in Danbury, Connecticut, is first baseman Sadie Zion. Zion plays for Team USA Baseball.

You can cheer on the Hunters from Aug. 2 to Sept. 6 during the regular season. The Hunters will have their first game on Aug. 2 against the San Francisco Fireballs. They will play the Los Angeles Queens on Aug. 5 and the New York Heights on Aug 8. They conclude the season on Sept. 6 against the Fireballs.

The Connecticut Sun fell to the Washington Mystics, losing their third game in a row. The Sun couldn’t stop the balanced efforts from the Mystics starting five.

The Sun started out the game strong, going on a 12-4 run and leading after the first quarter. As the game progressed, the Sun lost their lead. Later in the game, the Mystics went on a 24-8 run that Connecticut never recovered from.

The Sun’s Aneesah Morrow put up 21 points, along with four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Olivia Nelson-Ododa contributed 16 points, six rebounds and an assist. On the defensive end, Nelson-Ododa had a steal and three blocks.

The Mystics’ Sonia Citron put up 22 points, with three rebounds, four assists, a steal and two blocks. The guard shot at an efficient rate of 66.7 percent. Kiki Iriafen recorded a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double.

The Sun have struggled lately due to key injuries to Brittney Griner and Aaliyah Edwards. Both players bring a lot of leadership to the team. All season long, Griner and Edwards have dealt with injuries and have not participated in every game.

The Sun’s shooting percentage was slightly higher this game, at a rate of 41.3 percent. However, they could not defend the three ball, in which Washington shot at a rate of 50 percent.

Connecticut falls to 7-21 on the season. The Sun will stay on the road, taking on the Chicago Sky on Thursday night.

When Humphrey finally stepped onto the field in 2025, she immediately established herself as the nation’s premier attacker. Starting every game for the Tar Heels, she scored an NCAA freshman-record 90 goals while adding 28 assists for 118 points, leading North Carolina to an undefeated national championship season. Her electric play earned her the Tewaaraton Award, making her the first freshman in the history of the women’s game to receive lacrosse’s highest individual honor. She also collected IWLCA Player of the Year, IWLCA Attacker of the Year, NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player, ACC Tournament MVP, First-Team All-America and First-Team All-ACC recognition.​

​Instead of experiencing a sophomore slump, Humphrey elevated her game to another level in 2026. She tied the NCAA single-season record with 109 goals while recording 50 assists for 159 points–the second-highest single-season point total in NCAA history. Once again, she was named IWLCA Player and Attacker of the Year, NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player, First-Team All-Americanand First-Team All-ACC, cementing herself as the most dominant offensive player in college lacrosse.

Standing just 5-foot-4, Humphrey doesn’t overpower opponents with size. Instead, she relies on elite speed, exceptional agility, quick hands and outstanding lacrosse IQ. She excels at creating separation without the ball, finding scoring opportunities from impossible angles and finishing with either hand. Just as dangerous as a scorer, Humphrey is an outstanding passer whose vision consistently creates opportunities for teammates, making her the focal point of one of the nation’s most explosive offenses. Her relentless work ethic and competitive drive have also become defining characteristics of her game.

Humphrey’s success has extended well beyond Chapel Hill. She has already become a key contributor for Team USA, helping the United States capture gold medals at the 2025 Pan-American Women’s Lacrosse Championship and The World Games. She earned All-Tournament honors at the Pan-American Championship, won MVP honors at the inaugural Atlas Cup, and was selected to the U.S. roster for the 2026 World Championship, further establishing herself as one of the brightest young stars in the sport.​

Still early in her collegiate career, Chloe Humphrey has already rewritten record books and collected nearly every major award available. With multiple seasons still ahead at North Carolina, she is on pace to become one of the greatest players in NCAA women’s lacrosse history while helping usher the sport into a new era of popularity and excellence.

After a shortened freshman year in 2020, she became one of the nation’s premier offensive threats, earning All-Conference honors every full season of her collegiate career while developing into the centerpiece of the Dukes’ attack. Peterson combines exceptional size with quick hands around the crease, making her one of the toughest one-on-one matchups in the game.

By the time she graduated, Peterson had rewritten the James Madison record book. She finished as the program’s all-time leader in goals (298), points (363), shots (590), free-position goals (57) and draw controls (329), while also ranking among the school’s leaders in assists. Her remarkable consistency saw her score at least 45 goals in every full season she played, highlighted by a historic 2023 campaign in which she set single-season program records with 91 goals and 114 points. She followed that performance with another outstanding senior season, totaling 75 goals and 88 points while earning multiple First Team All-America honors.

Peterson’s trophy case reflects her dominance. She was a four-time All-American, twice earning First Team honors from the IWLCA while also collecting recognition from USA Lacrosse Magazine and ILWomen. She was a finalist for the prestigious Tewaaraton Award in 2023 and remained a nominee throughout her career. Peterson also captured conference Player of the Year honors and twice was named James Madison’s Female Athlete of the Year, cementing her legacy as one of the greatest players in program history.

What makes Peterson especially valuable at the professional level is the versatility of her game. While her goal-scoring draws headlines, she also excels on the draw circle, creates offense for teammates and thrives in transition. Her ability to finish through contact, attack from multiple angles and consistently produce in big moments makes her a complete offensive weapon rather than simply a pure finisher.

As she begins her WLL career, Peterson arrives with the resume of a proven winner and one of the most prolific scorers college lacrosse has ever seen. Her combination of size, athleticism, experiences and relentless scoring instinct gives her every opportunity to become an immediate impact player and one of the league’s next offensive stars.

Facing the Current, the Legacy capitalized on an early goal in the first half. Aïssata Traoré in the 18th minute, scored the game-winning and only goal of the game. The Legacy’s defensive performance helped the Legacy secure their third shutout in the last four matches.

Both teams traded chances through the opening 15 minutes before Boston found their breakthrough in the 17th minute. After a corner kick bounced off a Kansas City defender, Aïssata Traoré reacted first, sending a low shot into the back of the net to give the Legacy a 1-0 lead.

Kansas City responded with several dangerous opportunities end-to-end, but goalkeeper Casey Murphy came up with the key saves throughout the match to preserve the advantage. Nichelle Prince nearly doubled Boston’s lead just minutes after Traoré’s goal, but Current goalkeeper Marisa Jordan denied the attempt.

The second half featured end to end play, as the Current searched for an equalizer opportunity and Boston tried to build a lead. In the closing minutes, Ella Stevens received a red card, forcing Boston to finish the match with 10 players. Despite the disadvantage, the Legacy held firm to earn the victory.

Boston will look to build on the momentum when they travel to face Denver Summit on August 2.

The 2026 World Women’s Lacrosse Championships are here! Beginning on July 24 and concluding on August 2, this tournament will be held in Tokyo. There are players from our very own Boston Guard on Team USA. Cassidy Weeks, Charlotte North, Shea Dolce, Kenzie Kent,and Shea Baker will be aiming to win for our country!

Boston College’s women’s tennis team announced their achievements of ITA All-Academic Team Honors! In order to earn this prestigious award, the grade point average of the team needs to be 3.2 or more on a scale of 4.0.

The last time these two teams met was back on May 30 when the Current won 1-0 with a goal in the 69th minute by Temwa Chawinga. The Legacy have been in better form since the last time these teams met, with a current record of 4-4-8 and in 14th place, while the Current are 6th place with a record of 8-1-6.

The Legacy should look forward to this rematch and should take into consideration how the Current play and look for the win on Saturday.

This week, Lacan came to play when she arrived on the court to face the Phoenix Mercury on July 19. Lacan scored seven points along with making four assists. Additionally, she made one rebound and committed nine turnovers throughout her 37 minutes in the game.

Throughout the rest of the season, we are eager to see what else Leïla Lacan is capable of!

The Sun kept pace early, only trailing 36-26 in the opening quarter. Olivia Nelson-Ododa, Leila Lacan and Saniya Rivers playing the strongest. However, the Fever found their rhythm in the second quarter, outsourcing the Sun 34-20 to take a 70-46 lead into the second half.

Caitlin Clark led Indiana’s offense with 27 points and 11 assists, while Aliyah Boston added 22 points and 10 rebounds. The Fever continued to build their lead throughout the second half.

The Sun battled through the deficit with Leila Lacan finishing with 16 points and Saniya Rivers adding 13 points. Olivia Nelson-Ododa contributed 11 points, while Aneesah Morrow recorded 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Despite the loss, Connecticut continued to compete through the final minutes, even with Indiana’s early offensive surge proved too much to overcome. The Sun will look to bounce back in their upcoming game against the Mystics.

After attending Fukuchiyama Seibi High School, Yamamoto continued her baseball career at Kwansei Gakuin University, where she refined her all-around game and emerged as a dependable middle infielder. Following graduation, she became one of the founding members of the Hanshin Tigers Women, an organization that quickly became one of Japan’s premier women’s baseball clubs. Playing at the iconic Koshien Stadium, Yamamoto helped the Tigers capture a national club championship, cementing her reputation as a proven winner on one of the country’s biggest stages.

Primarily a shortstop and infielder, Yamamoto is known more for her instincts and reliability than overwhelming physical tools. Despite standing just 5-foot-tall (153 cm), she compensates with excellent footwork, quick reactions and smooth defensive actions. Offensively, she brings a disciplined approach at the plate, consistently putting the ball in play while using her speed and baseball IQ to pressure opposing defenses. Her left-handed bat and ability to contribute in multiple facets of the game make her a valuable asset wherever she plays.

Yamamoto’s career has continued to grow in recent years. After her time with the Hanshin Tigers Women, she also competed for the Setouchi BlueShines before being selected by Boston with the 16th overall pick in the second round of the inaugural Women’s Pro Baseball League draft. The opportunity marked another milestone in a career defined by perseverance and continuous improvement, giving her the chance to showcase her talents on an international stage while helping expand opportunities for women’s baseball worldwide.

Whether anchoring the infield, delivering timely hits, or serving as a leader in the clubhouse, Suzuka Yamamoto has consistently demonstrated the qualities of a winning player. Her journey from youth baseball in Japan to professional opportunities abroad reflects not only her dedication to the sport but also the growing global reach of women’s baseball. As the game continues to evolve, Yamamoto remains an outstanding ambassador whose work ethic, experience and steady play continue to inspire the next generation of athletes.

Beisel went to the University of Florida to study Telecommunications. Here she won nine Southeastern Conference individual championship titles. Additionally, Beisel was honored as the SEC Female Swimmer of the Year and won an NCAA individual title in the 200-yard backstroke both in 2012. The next year, she won an NCAA individual title for the 400-yard medley and earned 18 All-American Honors as well as first-team Academic All-American recognition. In 2014, Beisel was selected as the University of Florida’s Academic Athlete of the Year.

In the 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017 World Championships, Beisel participated in the 400m Individual Medley. She won gold in 2011. She swam the 200m Women’s Backstroke in 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2015. In 2014, Beisel raced in the 4x200m Freestyle Relay, the 400m Freestyle, 400m Individual Medley and 800m Freestyle. In 2013, she won bronze for the 400m Individual Medley and she won bronze in 2009 for the 200m Backstroke.

Not only was Elizabeth Beisel in the World Championships, but she also competed for Team USA in the Olympics. In the 2008 Beijing Olympics, she placed 4th in the 400m Individual Medley and 5th in the 200m Backstroke. Four years later in London, she won silver for the 400m Individual Medley and bronze in the 200m backstroke. At the next games in Rio de Janeiro, she placed 6th in the 400m Individual Medley.

Now retired, she volunteers with the Special Olympics and the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. Elizabeth Beisel wrote a book titled Silver Linings, which focuses on her time as a competitive swimmer. Additionally, she is the first woman to make the swim to Block Island. While making the swim, she was fundraising for cancer research after losing her father. Beisel was inducted into the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Hall of Fame in 2022. In 2024, she was inducted into the Rhode Island Aquatic Hall of Fame. She isn’t simply a swimmer; there are many lanes to her life to dive into!

Aneesah Morrow is back from injury and will be able to play in tonight’s game after being out for six games. Ashlon Jackson is listed as an active player for the game but could be ruled out again due to eligibility reasons. Players to look out for are Aneesah Morrow, Olivia Nelson-Ododa, and Leila Lecan.

Aaliyah Edwards, Brittney Griner, and Sanyia Rivers are all sidelined with injuries and will likely miss tonight’s game. Edwards injured her knee in Sunday night’s game and will be out. Griner and Rivers are considered day-to-day and are questionable for tonight.

The Fever are currently on a two game winning streak. Players to watch out for are Aliyah Boston, Kelsey Mitchell, and Sophie Cunningham.

Caitlin Clark listed as probable to play in tonight’s games as she is dealing with her back injury. Damiris Dantas will be out for the game due to her knee injury.

This will be the second time this season the two teams are facing off. The Fever won the first matchup. Watch the Sun try to secure another win this season at 8 P.M. EST. The game can be watched on USA Network with the WNBA League Pass.

For college, Heckel committed to play basketball at the University of Southern California. During her time at USC, she averaged 6.1 points, 1.9 assists and 1.3 steals per game. Heckel started in seven out of the 34 games she played in. During this season, USC made it to the Elite Eight during the NCAA tournament and were defeated by UConn. After the season ended, Heckel entered the transfer portal and transferred to UConn.

At UConn during Heckel’s sophomore year, she averaged 6.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.4 steals per game. She played in all 39 games that season and came in off the bench. UConn made it to the Final Four during the 2026 season but lost to the University of South Carolina. Heckel was awarded the 2026 NCAA Elite Scholar-Athlete Award.

In addition to her collegiate success, Heckel plays for Team USA basketball. She won gold at the 2024 FIBA U18 AmeriCup and at the 2025 FIBA U19 World Cup. At the 2024 FIBA U18 AmeriCup, Heckle averaged 12.8 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. During the 2025 FIBA U19 World Cup, she averaged 9.0 points and 3.6 assists per game, and started every game.

You can cheer on Heckel during the upcoming college basketball season. UConn will have their first game of the season on Nov. 5 against Michigan.

Washington built a two-goal advantage in the first half, with Tara Rudd opening the scoring in the 25th minute before Trinity Rodman doubled the lead six minutes later.

Boston created several scoring opportunities throughout the match, including first-half chances from Bianca St-Georges and Aïssata Traoré. After halftime, Traoré and substitute Sammy Smith each tested Spirit goalkeeper Sandy MacIver as the Legacy searched for a breakthrough.

Smith provided that spark in the 87th minute, beating the Washington back line to a long ball before finishing to cut the deficit to 2-1. Boston pushed forward during stoppage time, including a late effort from Annie Karich, but the Spirit held on to secure the victory.

Despite the loss, the Legacy finished with an 11-7 advantage in shots. Boston will look to bounce back on Saturday, July 25, when it hosts the Kansas City Current.

The Connecticut Sun fell to the Phoenix Mercury in a close game throughout. The Sun couldn’t stop the Mercury, led by a 21-point performance from DeWanna Bonner.

The Sun struggled to go on a run throughout the game. The Mercury became unstoppable with three strong runs. Early on, Phoenix went on an 8-0 run, followed by a 14-4 run in the second quarter. At halftime, the Mercury were up 43-33.

The Sun’s Olivia Nelson-Ododa recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Brittney Griner was the leading scorer for the Sun with 19 points on the night.

A balanced scoring effort from the Mercury’s DeWanna Bonner and Kahleah Copper was the difference in this game. Bonner recorded 21 points on the night along with six rebounds and a steal. Copper recorded 18 points, four rebounds and four assists. On the defensive end, Copper had a steal and a block.

The Sun have done better lately, winning two of their last three games. They have seven wins on the season. The Mercury played tough, as they didn’t want to drop back-to-back games to the Sun.

The Sun struggled with their shooting tonight, going 37.9 percent from the floor. On the other side, the Mercury went 41.3 percent from the floor.

Connecticut falls to 7-19 on the season. The Sun will stay on the road, taking on the Indiana Fever on Wednesday night.
